Hand Held Nitrous
Some examinations can be very painful and most outpatient procedures almost always involve some pain. For many people just having a needle poked into them (immunizations, local anesthetics, Botox) can be a source of tremendous fear, anxiety and pain. Several studies report that 63 % of children and 38 % of adults have a strong fear of needles. The more fear and pain they experience from a needle, the more fear and pain they report from the procedure itself. This fear is a major source of fainting, seizures, and is the largest source of dental office emergencies. Needle fear in children can cause the parents to have increased fainting, fleeing, and the need to assist with restraining the child. Many people would agree that when a health care provider says its, “just a poke” it can sometimes be way more than a “poke”. For example, a big needle is used to extract bone marrow from the center of bones and the procedure is a long way from “just a poke”. Here is a photo of a patient having bone marrow harvested from his hip. Notice the attending physician is holding him down with his hand and his wife is holding is hand. There is some serious pain being experienced here.

More Than Just Needles

Needles such as those used in immunizations, local analgesics or Botox injections are just one source of patient pain, fear and anxiety. Physicians always do their best to eliminate patient pain but sometimes there is not much that can be done. Here is a list of common short term exams and procedures that are each associate with considerable pain:

Common Painful Procedures
dental caries
tattoo removal
colposcopy
collagen joint injections
vascular access
Nexplanan implant
prostate ultrasound
facial aesthetic injections
hangnails
lip incision
lacerations
nasal alar excision
vasectomy
biopsies
mole surgery
cystoscopy
belly button revision
liquid nitrogen treatments
transoesophageal echocardiography
wound care
lumbar puncture
spinal tap
lip filler injections
bone marrow aspiration
arterial punctures
dislocation reductions
acne scar removal
stitches
nerve block injection
fear and pain from imaging
and many others

Even when a physician uses a local injection to numb an area of the body there is substantial pain, anxiety and fear. For example a breast biopsy or vasectomy are done under local anesthesia, but the initial injection can be very uncomfortable. These two examples of painful procedures reveal the gap that exists between the way doctors and dentists treat their patients. A physician will perform a local injection to numb the area to be addressed, while a dentist will often start with a dose of nitrous oxide or laughing gas even before any injection occurs. The nitrous oxide places the patient in a state of minimal sedation even before a local injection is performed. Until now, doctors have been unable to treat patients the way dentists do– with the least amount of pain possible.

There are over over 80 million painful procedures performed every year in the U.S. That means there are over 80 million Americans experiencing considerable patient pain. Physicians inability to use nitrous oxide gas to reduce patient pain was the catalyst to a breakthrough invention: a nitrous oxide inhaler.

Introducing Hand-Held Nitrous® a Nitrous Oxide Inhaler

This simple, cost effective device delivers a small amount of USP medical grade nitrous oxide. The device creates short-term reduction in pain and anxiety in seconds. Patients recover in minutes. This pocket-sized device is easy to use and requires no specialized training. Plastic surgeons in particular have found the device to be exceptionally successful when performing Botox injections, belly button, nipple and eye lid reconstructions, moll removal and many other painful and uncomfortable office procedures. Dentists use it for pediatric examinations and before local anesthetics are administered for dental caries. Using Hand-Held Nitrous® is faster, cheaper, and easier than using in-house, bulky nitrous oxide and oxygen systems. Any health care provider doing any short-term painful procedure can use the device.  Over 90% of patients state they would definitely use it again. This safe, simple device gives health care providers an inexpensive way to improve the patients experience. This video shows how health care providers use the device.

Nitrous Oxide Inhaler Clinical Results

In 2014 the first clinical study of the device was completed on 78 adult and children who received a variety of different medical procedures. Here is a copy of the results of this first study. The results confirm that Hand-Held Nitrous® is not only safe, but it reduces patient pain to such an extent that almost all physicians and patients would definitely use the device again.
